Obama the terrorist?

Leonard Doyle writes on our blog about  claims from the McCain camp that 'Barack Obama's friend tried to kill my family', while McCain's 'warm-up man' refers to Obama as Barack Hussein Obama. And he's not the only one.

Question: Is this level of sniping unusual in US politics or is the McCain camp getting seriously desparate?

Edit: More on the claims from McCain supporters that Obama is a traitor.

Despirate? Really?
President Jimmy Carter had a sizable lead in the polls over an underrated and much spoofed B Movie Actor, Governor Ronald Regan until two days prior to the election. The Regan campaign got a tad bit more aggressive as the election drew closer as I recall. Didn't the media write off Senator McCain during the primaries when he was carrying his own luggage on commercial airlines. Perhaps Senator Obama's lead will result in an electoral victory however that would be more of a blind faith position on the part of his campaign in light of historical facts. I feel rather certain that Senator Obama's campaign isn't sending back any contributions as of yet although it is curious that they now have their own 24 hour a day network on Dish Satelite TV. Senator McCain appears rather subdued for somebody who is allegedly desperate. Ali's famous "rope-a-dope" isn't some lost art.
