Obama the terrorist?

Leonard Doyle writes on our blog about  claims from the McCain camp that 'Barack Obama's friend tried to kill my family', while McCain's 'warm-up man' refers to Obama as Barack Hussein Obama. And he's not the only one.

Question: Is this level of sniping unusual in US politics or is the McCain camp getting seriously desparate?

Edit: More on the claims from McCain supporters that Obama is a traitor.

I think McCain is a dangerous man, and is showing it. I hope Obama doesn't respond in kind, but in truth, dignity and strength. Should Obama become our next president, it will demonstrate that one can win without being vile or violent.

I agree. This would make it a real victory indeed.

So far Obama has shown restraint there. He could, if he wanted, play the same game and bring up McCain's association to G. Gordin Liddy whom McCain has said he's proud of. But the Obama campaign hasn't gone there.
