Obama the terrorist?

Leonard Doyle writes on our blog about  claims from the McCain camp that 'Barack Obama's friend tried to kill my family', while McCain's 'warm-up man' refers to Obama as Barack Hussein Obama. And he's not the only one.

Question: Is this level of sniping unusual in US politics or is the McCain camp getting seriously desparate?

Edit: More on the claims from McCain supporters that Obama is a traitor.

Calling him a terrorist and tying him to the Middle East in a way clearly intended to be malicious... that's going way far. As far as unusual, that's difficult to say, because - how many candidates like Obama have we had? Mudslinging's always been a part of American politics, but this is a unique situation.

But the McCain camp is getting desperate, yes. I don't know why there's an or in your question, I think the two options go hand in hand.
