I thought Palin looked and sounded like she was reciting a rehearsed speech from memory half the time. The fact that she seemed to steer a good number of the questions into what she wanted to talk about even when it was completely unrelated (And she stated as such a few times) didn't help.

It's true she barely answered the question asked. I can't believe some journalists are saying she did good just because their expectations of her were so low, that it feels like she came up on top...

An empty shell
Palin is very good at repeating what she's been taught and the camera loves her. But did she understand the question about Achille's heel? I doubt it.
Oh and it's NU-CLE-AR not NU-KE-LAR, pretty please.

Also when she asked for more debates at the end, I couldn't believe my ears. The Republicans pushed for one VP debate ONLY and she keeps refusing interviews and press conferences. So please, a little honesty.

I wish Biden had been more agressive against her but he could have appeared vindicative against this "poor regular hockey mom" so he probably played it right.

Re: An empty shell
I cringed every time she said "nuke-YOU-lar" too.

There was a lot of questions that she either didn't seem to understand, or purposely misdirected the answer. The moderator called her out on a few of them (And Biden too) but there were many more. Or she'd give a one word answer to the question, then go off on her rehearsed speech.

I'm glad that Palin said she wasn't going to answer the questions the way that the moderator or Biden wanted, but that she was going to speak to the American public. That's what the debates should be about is getting your views out there. I don't really think about who won or who lost. I will agree that both Biden and Palin made statements that were inconsistent or incorrect, but I feel they both got their viewpoints to the voters. That's what really matters.
And as a sidenote, I think the job of the moderator should be to ask the questions and keep track of time and that's it. The fact that Gwen Ifill was saying that neither one of them answered one of the questions is just garbage. In my opinion, she should not have been moderating this debate considering that she stands to profit from Obama winning the Presidency.

She did seem to do some unfair treatment. Near the beginning I noticed that she wasn't giving Biden a chance to rebut what Palin was saying, but she did give Palin a chance to rebut Biden.

And I disagree about what a debate is about. A speech is about getting your views out there. A debate is about defending your position and answering questions the people have to clarify your position on what they care about. A few times it did seem like she was turning it into a speech though.

During the debate, a friend mentioned that the cameras kept going to shots of Govener Palin's backside. As a watcher for such occasions, I did not notice such direct connentations. Was I just paying attention to the debates or what?

Say what you want about Palin being a trained monkey if you'd like. I just want to point out that less that two years ago Senator Biden and Senator Obama were practically at each others throats with the disagreements that they had. Now whenever someone mentions Obama in front of Biden he smiles and nods...

If Palin is trained monkey than Biden is excellet puppet...

People can change their minds. My beef with Palin is that she doesn't seem to have an original thought on her own.

Palin vs. Biden?
I think Biden owned Palin. It didn't help her any to continually blow off the moderator's questions either. I don't see how there is any way that anyone can take her seriously. She can't talk the talk or walk the walk. She reminds me of a Stepford wife.

I would love to see how either one of these candidates or their running mates would fair in a debate with Ron Paul or Bob Barr.

They both did better than expected, but with Biden's extensive knowledge and experience with domestic and foreign matters, he won the debate. Palin held her ground, but all she had was memorized answers to back her up.

It was as expected. The issues I have are
- the expectations for Palin are, for some reason, very low. She is a bright likable woman; if she shows no command of foreign affairs, economics, or whatever else speaks to the fact that she isn't interested (as opposed to not being capable). That's serious. Also, once introduced to the issues by McCain's team, she should be able to reason about them. So far I am yet to see a glimpse of reasoning
- in general it annoys me to great deal that people want someone they can have pizza with. I *want* the president/vice-president who has amazing sophisticated view of the issues. I also want them to be able to explain those issues in plain terms
- values of middle america; values of the hearland; small-town values. I'd like a question that says "define ..."

A political analyst once said that Americans voted according to this: "You're stranded in the middle of nowehere and you have to hitchhike, which candidate do you think will stop their car and help you". It's scary but it seems to be true.
And you're so right about defining American values.

Really, really glad I'm British... Palin makes Boris Johnson look intelligent!

Still trying to wrap my brain around the fact that the Republicans have an even chance of actually winning. It's like the Monster raving Loony party, only they're not funny or joking!
